What You Need to Know About Hydration

It is imperative that swimmers hydrate before, during, and after a workout or a competition.

Fluid replacement is probably the most important nutritional concern for any athlete. During training and competitions, fluid is lost through sweating and through the lungs while breathing. If this fluid is not replaced, it can lead to dehydration. A dehydrated athlete has a decreased volume of blood circulating through the body, which means:

  • The amount of blood pumped with each heartbeat decreases
  • Exercising muscles do not receive enough oxygen
  • Exhaustion sets in and the athlete's performance suffers

60% of your body weight is water, and you need to keep it that way!

The best way to prevent dehydration is to maintain body fluid levels by drinking fluids before, during, and after a practice or competition.

  • Consume 10-16 ounces of cold fluid about 15-30 minutes before practice/competition
  • Consume 4-8 ounces of cold fluid during practice/competition at 15-20 minute intervals

*Important Note: When you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Drink fluids regularly before, during, and after practice, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Meet Information & Due Date: 44th Annual Freelander Swim Meet

This is a three day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) meet that is open to all swimmers - there are no qualifying times. As always, you can choose to swim one day, two days, or all three days of the meet. This is a fun, outdoor meet in Wooster, OH. Traditionally, teams camp out at the campsite that is located directly next to the pool, but there are also hotels nearby for those families that are interested. NEON will be renting out a team campsite. Teams set up tents on deck for the swimmers to stay out of the sun, and the kids all hang out and cheer on their teammates.

The due date for entries is Saturday June 9th. Please send your entries to neonswimming@gmail.com.

As usual, please provide the name(s) of your swimmer(s) in the e-mail, which day(s) you would like to participate in, and whether you would like the coaches to pick events or if you have chosen specific events.

If you want to camp out, also state that in your e-mail. As previously mentioned, NEON will be renting out a campsite for the team but we will need to know how many people will be camping out. The cost will be $10 for the entire weekend.

If you would like to pick your swimmer's events: Go to http://neonswim.com/neon_005.htm and click on "Freelander." It will download the meet information in Word, and the event listings will be towards the end of the document.
