Meet Information: Avon Lake Invitational

It is time again for the annual Avon Lake Invitational! This meet will be held on July 21st in Avon Lake, Ohio. It is an invitational meet that includes USA teams, YMCA teams, and also summer recreation teams. This year will be NEON's third year competing - in our first year we finished in third place and last year we finished in first! We'd like to bring home another first place trophy this year, so we need everyone to sign up and compete! From Bronze all the way up to Platinum, the newest swimmers to the most experienced, we want you all to participate!

We love to take as much of our team as possible to this meet because it is a great team atmosphere (last year almost the entire NEON team attended and we'd love to have another big turn-out this summer). Each year we set up tents with food and drinks and the kids have a blast. The more swimmers that participate, the more relays we can have in each age group (starting at 6 & Under!). The swimmers really enjoy the competition (not to mention the ability to play in the "fun" parts of the outdoor pool during the break given at the half-way point of the meet).

Entries for this meet are due by midnight on Friday July 5th. Please send your entries to neonswimming@gmail.com. Coaches will choose which events swimmers will be entered in for this meet.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask any NEON coach before or after practice, or send an e-mail to Coach Kara (ms.kdennis@gmail.com) or Coach Eric (aquaman429@cox.net).

How to Guide: Getting the Most Out of Your Training

Each NEON coach has stressed the importance of QUALITY training to their group, from Bronze all the way up to Platinum. "Garbage" yardage is swimming without focus - swimming without thinking about proper technique, also known as sloppy swimming. Training in this way, with sloppy swimming, does not help swimmers improve. It is important that swimmers focus on proper technique in addition to challenging themselves physically to make sure they are getting the most out of each practice they attend. Below is an article posted by USA Swimming that discusses this issue and elaborates about how swimmers can get the most out of their training. Please share this article with your swimmers - it is an immensely important aspect to their success in the water.

PERFECT PRACTICE: GETTING THE MOST OF YOUR TRAINING

6/4/2013

BY DR. ALAN GOLDBERG//SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST, COMPETITIVEDGE.COM

RACES ARE WON AND LOST, LONG BEFORE YOUR MEETS

Most serious swimmers put in the same amount of time training each and every week. Why is it that only a select few of these athletes will end up getting more out of their practices, and as a result, improve faster and go further in the sport than the majority of their teammates? The answer has to do with HOW they practice.

IT'S THE QUALITY OF YOUR TRAINING THAT ALWAYS COUNTS, NOT just THE QUANTITY

Diligently making every practice, each week and putting in all that required yardage by itself will not make you a champion. What will always help you take your swimming to the next level is the quality of your work. Simply put, what you put into your training is key. For example, if you go through those long brutal sets distracted, slowing down when things get hard, wishing you were elsewhere, or focusing on how much you hate this set, then this kind of “dead yardage” training will always hold you back when it comes to race time.

However, if you train smart and you focus on all the little details while you're swimming, if you make sure your stroke is correct, you're working on integrating the changes your coach has suggested, your turns are precise, and you push yourself to keep going hard when you don't want to anymore, then you will find that you get far more out of your practices and race faster when it counts!

“PERFECT PRACTICE” IS TRAINING MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY

This is the highest quality that you can train at.

The vast majority of swimmers just train PHYSICALLY

  • Attend most if not all practices
  • Usually make most sets
  • Do dryland and weight training
  • Concentration is not always on what they're doing
  • Oftentimes wish practice was over or they were elsewhere

A much smaller percentage of swimmers train both PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY

  • Attend all practices, dryland and weights
  • Concentrate very carefully on what they're doing while they're doing it
  • Conscientious about stroke technique, starts and turns
  • Make a point to integrate corrections from coaches into work

A select few athletes use “perfect practice” and train PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY

  • Attend all practices, dryland and weights
  • Focus very carefully on what they're doing while they're doing it
  • Conscientious about stroke technique, starts and turns
  • Integrate corrections from coaches into training
  • Love to swim and want to be at practice
  • Have an emotionally compelling, BIG goal in their mind whenever they train (That is, they regularly ask themselves, ”How is what I'm doing right now, going to help me get to my goal?”)

FIND AN EMOTIONALLY COMPELLING REASON TO TRAIN

Swimming is a very difficult sport to do well. Ultimate success involves a huge time commitment, sacrifice and almost continuous, year-round training and the discipline to regularly push yourself outside your comfort zone. To become a champion, you must learn to tolerate a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort. In order to do this every day, you need very powerful motivation. This motivation will always come to you from your personal reasons for swimming. Swimming is much too hard a sport to do for others, i.e. your parents or coaches. The motivation for working hard must come from inside of you. You have to have a compelling, personal reason to regularly train hard. You will go much further as a swimmer and have far more success when you make a commitment to using “perfect practice” whenever you train.

This means that at any given moment in training, when the going gets rough and a part of you wants to back down, you have to be able to ask yourself WHY you're doing what you're doing and how it will get you that much closer to your goals. When you can connect with your emotional reasons for swimming, it becomes far easier to ride out the storms of fatigue, boredom and doubt that regularly roll in over the course of a season.

2nd Annual Swim-A-Thon!

Last year was the first year NEON participated in a USA Swimming sponsored Swim-A-Thon.  Our swimmers did an amazing job of raising just over $1500.00 for our team! This enabled us to buy new zoomers for training. We had more than half of our swimmers swim 200 laps, the maximum allowed.  Two 8 & unders swam over 80 laps!  It was a great way for our team to spend a Saturday morning and got both swimmers and parents involved in a team activity.

This year, our Swim-A-Thon is scheduled for June 22, 2013 at Fairview Rec and we have set a goal to double the amount we raised from last year...$3000.00.  It’s a huge goal but we know our swimmers can do it.  It is going to take every NEON swimmer participating in not only swimming the laps but asking family, friends, teachers, and neighbors to support them in their commitment to not only their team but also USA Swimming.

Here is how it works...

Each swimmer will be given a pledge envelope.  Once you have the envelope, set your goal and decide how you want to collect the donations.  Swimmers can either ask for a flat amount and collect before they swim or they can get sponsored per lap they swim.  That money will be collected after they have participated in the Swim-A-Thon.  There will be posters at the pool with each swimmer’s name on it.  For each $5.00 you raise, you will be able to enter your name in a drawing for 3 prizes NEON will be giving away.  Last year, the prizes were a USA swimming T-shirt, NEON apparel, and a Speedo warm up jacket with NEON Swimming and the swimmer’s name.  In addition to the prizes, coaches will be setting goals and also offering incentives within each group.

The day of the Swim-A-Thon swimmers will be given 2 hours to complete the laps.  There is a maximum of 200 laps allowed per swimmer.  Envelopes can be turned in that day if the donations were collected before or returned to any coach up to a week after the Swim-A-Thon.

This can be a great way to raise money for our team and and even better way for our entire team and their families to have fun working together.

Joy Presley will have envelopes available everyday after practice.  If you have any questions, would like to help with the Swim-A-Thon, or know you will be available to be a counter the morning of the Swim-A-Thon, please let her know either at practice or via email (joypresley@oh.rr.com).

Our swimmers work so hard to reach the goals they set every season.  Let’s support the entire team in reaching this goal.  Please encourage your swimmer to participate,  it would be great to have every swimmer from Bronze to Platinum show up Saturday June 22!

Thanks for supporting NEON Swimming!

*If anyone works for a company that matches fund raising donations, let Joy know. USA Swimming provides letters that she can get if needed.
